Heidelberg Panorama
Munster (Sebastian).c1550 - 73 x 27 cm
Florentissimae civitatis Heidelbergensis citus & genuina pictura, tam arcem quam reliqua illius loci insigniora aedificia pulchre intuenti ob oculos statuens', uncoloured woodcut. Two sheets conjoined (as published). Wide top and bottom margins; narrower left margin and right side trimmed to the border. Folds strengthened on verso. Latin text on verso. The final Latin edition was 1572. Other images available. Published in the 'Cosmographia', Basel, c.1550, the earliest German language description of the world. A view across the River Neckar from the North, showing the town, its houses, churches, the Castle and the Armoury, the famous bridge, activities in the river I can't quite understand and horses being ridden along the Northern shores. A riverside building is labelled ‘Munch’ (?). In the town a description ‘Barfuss’; presumably the Franciscan friary. On the hillside above the houses ‘Castaneae & Bestern Baum’ so this must be a Chestnut tree plantation! Lots of delightful quirky things to take the eye. A delightful panorama showing the City over 450 years ago.
