An extensive and detailed gazetteer. Eleven folding maps including: Africa, North America, Australia, England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Europe. Plus "nearly three-hundred engravings and plans of cities, towns and localities of general interest". Book Condition: Very Good. Head of spine a little damaged and some rubbing of the leather. The folding maps in very good condition. Very clean and neat copy. Recommended. Thick 8vo. £75

Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good save for minor chips to spine end and lower fore-edges; protected with clear sheet. Map of England & Wales and 43 County maps. In fact almost all of the maps have been taken from the issue of 1828 as a copy of this was available with all but Essex uncoloured which is better for reproduction. £75

Approx. 2 3/4 in thick, xlviii + 823 pages with 10 large fold-out colour maps inc the World in (separate) hemispheres, Australia and North America, some have a short marginal tear, repaired. Purple cloth boards and three quarter leather with 5 raised bands, blind tooled lozenges and gilt blocked title and lines on spine and to edges of leather on boards. AEG. Bookplate. The Gazetteer covers the whole world with numerous engravings in the text. Thick 8vo. A very handsome volume. £85

Complete with 43 maps hand-coloured in outline (including a large folding map of Yorkshire, a large hand-coloured folding map of England and Wales (laid down on paper), and 7 maps on 6 extending hand-coloured plates of the Isle of Wight; Environs of: London; Bath; Little Hampton, Bognor, Worthing and Arundel; Brighton; Margate and Ramsgate; Cheltenham. Contemporary half morocco with cloth boards, all edges speckled. Book Condition: All the maps in excellent condition. Cloth rather frayed and worn. The upper hinge broken for a cm at the top. Hard covers. 11 Volumes in 5. 8vo. 1,592 pp and the fifth vol additionally includes An Alphabetical Chronology by Leonard Townsend; 144 pp. Contemporary full calf with triple ruled blind tooling to the boards with small rosettes at the corners. Edges and returns to the boards have a pattern in blind tooling. Spine has five raised bands with gilt decoration and two labels. The upper: gilt title on red, the lower: volume details on golden brown. Blind ruling to the other compartments. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Head and tailbands and ribbon markers to all volumes (in some cases ribbons detached). In all 56 double page maps by Archer; 235 engraved views; 22 portraits; 11 frontispieces and 11 vignettes on Title. Book Condition: Very good. The bindings all firm and together. Spines sunned. A little scarring to the calf here and there, mainly to the second volume and the lower board of the first vol has some staining. Internally there is spotting and some water staining that generally do not affect the printed area of the plates. The maps have escaped staining and foxing. Vol 3 has a little damage to the labels but with no loss of lettering. A very handsome set. £450

Hard Cover. Prize Binding. Orig. red full calf with gilt rulings to the boards and five raised bands to the spine which has elaborate decoration to the panels and gilt title on a black label. There is a gilt emblem to the upper board with a mitre and surrounding strapwork wording "The Northern Church of England School" and the first blank has an inscription ".... Rossall School 1863 - for Classics". All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. xii + 720 pp. With 6 fold-out hand wash coloured maps as issued. The book covers Britain "from the Earliest Times to the Present Day with a Sketch of the Commencement of Colonisation on the Part of the English Nation". It contains a detailed survey of Britain's physical geography, its historical development from Roman times to the mid nineteenth century and in depth information about each county or division of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. A very handsome volume which is very scarce in its original form, being largely only available in a facsimile edition. Book Condition: Near Fine. The only blemishes are some light indentations to the boards and dulling of the gilt title. Highly recommended. Sm. 8vo. £65
