UK639 a | Devonshire | Devon = shire Described by C: Saxton. Corrected, Amended, and many Additions by P: Lea. This is a very rare map of Devon, developed from that of John Speed. It has a very fine View of Excester (sic) with a numbered key to 48 places and 9 coats of arms. Believed to be the later state of the plate with the corrected spelling of Saxton and the words: Brixham key ye Princ of Orang Land, in Torbay. The map is coloured in outline and this appears to be original. Unfortunately this copy has suffered in its 315 year life. A piece of the map at the bottom, centre has been lost and replaced with old paper and the border lines drawn in pencil. Apart from these short lengths of lines there is no loss of print. The surface has a somewhat careworn appearance and the map has at some point been folded into four and these folds have been strengthened with old paper. There is further strengthening along the lower margin, parts of the upper margin and also a short tear near Lyme which is scarcely visible and a similar one near the coats of arms. There are signs of old tape outside the border. Despite these repairs it will still look handsome in a mount. In a good state this map would command well in excess of £1,000. Two images available, the first showing the map in a mount. | Saxton/Lea | 1694 | 45 x 39 | £480 | ||||||
